The historical centre of the town stands in a strategic position on a hill along the Arno river in the middle between Florence and Pisa; the town, until the definitive Florentine conquest, was the seat of fights between the two cities. See of diocese, San Miniato is an important economic and industrial centre in the area of leather and is famous for its white truffles. It was privileged by emperors such as Frederick II of Swabia and by popes such as Gregory V e Eugene IV.
