Volterra is in the province of Pisa. The town, famous for the extraction and processing of alabaster, still has a beautiful historical centre of Etruscan origins (Only Porta All’Arco belongs to this period an is greatly preserved, and Porta Diana, which keeps the blocks of the jambs; most of the walls built with cyclopean blocks of local stone; the Acropolis, where there are two temples, several buildings and a few tanks, and many hypogea used to bury the dead), with Roman ruins and medieval buildings such as the Cathedral, the Medici Fortress and Palazzo dei Priori in the homonymous square, the nerve centre of the town.
